Career, cats, and kin

Recently, Heather and I have been job hunting in various markets. We have discussed leaving the station and area for many reasons. On the other hand, there are just as many reasons for me to stay. I love my job, the people I directly work with, the house we live in, and the area. A move to a larger market, though, means larger pay. The move would also allow me to improve my skills, work with more technology, and probably handle my camera A LOT more.

The midnight shift isn't bad. When breaking news happens, it is usually something big for this area and I get to prove my mettle as a spot news photog. I get to write the stories I shoot (thanks to the producer who lets me), and I get to yell a lot without worrying about the suits. The biggest complaint I have about the shift is I don't get to shoot packages, although my video usually ends up in some reporter's package the next day...it's not the same.

The company that owns our station is going through some changes and is seemingly unstable at this point. This is causing a lot of anxiety among the staff, Heather and myself included, but, the biggest reason for the thought of moving is the chance to grow in our chosen profession. I have to admit that I have been feeling stagnant for quite awhile now. So, the resumes and demo reels are converging on strategic areas in which we are interested in for one reason or another...JUST IN CASE.

Other notes of interest...While outside today, letting the dog use the potty before going to bed, Skittles found a new friend. I had heard the creature and for some reason (possibly fatigue) mistook it for a bird being ultra-annoying. Alas, it was a little kitten that was lost and whining in the overgrown part of my yard that I have been ignoring with my lawnmower because I have not removed the large limbs that accumulated over the winter.

Skittles, being the strange and friendly dog that she is, went over in the grass and ushered the cat out to where I was standing on the sidewalk. The dog had this look on her face that I could read, "Can I keep it, dad, can I? Huh? Huh? Huh?" Then, the child came out the back the door, and having the keen senses that children possess to notice specific things that will please them while driving their parents bonkers, she instantly spotted the kitten. So, now I had two faces pleadingly upturned to me in reference to this animal that had somehow ended up in the high grass of my back yard. What could I do, I yielded to the majority...Even in a dictatorship such as mine it is wise to sometimes allow the little peoples' voice to reign.

We took the kitten, who is still without a name, in to the house and gave her some food and water. Actually, she just ate Skittles' food in Skittles' bowl. Skittles didn't mind for the most part. It didn't take long for the cat to become accustomed to the house and us. In fact, she acted as if this had always been her house and her family. When I went to lay down in the evening for my prework nap (something that has been traditional nap time for Skittles and I) the cat joined us without hesitance. She lay by my head while Skittles lay by my feet, her usual spot.
